How to use:

  1. Obtain all the relevant Health Hazard (H3XX) statements from your Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
  2. Enter the H number (e.g. H302) into the search function above.
  3. Make a note of the hazard rating that each statement belongs to.
  4. Your overall hazard rating for the substance should be based on the highest hazard category identified. For example, if the Safety Data Sheet lists the substance as H302 (Category B rating) and H319 (Category A rating), the overall hazard category rating of the COSHH assessment would be Category B.

You may want to update your CoSHH risk assessment template to allow the assessor to input the rating.

Hazard Rating Categories

A – Least hazardous substances
B – Medium hazard
C – High hazard
D – Most hazardous substances (seek an alternative substance)
E – Special cases – avoid use where possible (use an alternative substance)
